Spain’s threat to derail Brexit is toothless

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez isn’t mincing words. If terms regarding the disputed territory of Gibraltar aren’t ironed out, Spain will not be supporting the UK’s Brexit deal.

But Spain’s threat will do little more than delay UK Prime Minster Theresa May’s Brexit effort because the deal doesn’t require EU unanimity, but rather a  “strong qualified majority”.

“After my conversation with Theresa May, our positions remain far away”, Mr Sanchez wrote on Twitter. “My government will always defend the interests of Spain. If there are no changes we will veto Brexit.”

Still, EU diplomats said they are confident that Spain will turn around.
