Telecom & IT / Maldives

“Maldivians are eager to embrace new technologies.”

Dhiraagu has been developing Maldivian telecommunications for 25 years. We spoke to Managing Director Ismael Waheed about new investments and teaming up with China.

What distinguishes Dhiraagu from its competitors?

We believe we are the trusted brand for both consumer and business markets and we deliver total communication solutions. We are the only operator in the country to have linked the Maldives from North to South through a fibre-optic submarine cable with capability to deliver high-speed data and next generation telecom services across the country.

How will the mega projects further your activities?

Our investments are aligned with the government’s development programs. For example, we already have a fibre-optic network in Hulhumale City which we are expanding to support the new developments. Similarly, the SEZ will help further our business.

What role does the government play in these changes?

Dhiraagu is one of the most successful joint venture investments in the Maldives, and a good example of a strong partnership between the government and a foreign investor. We have the capacity to support the government’s upcoming ICT master plan.

What are your plans for 2015?

By 2015 we plan to provide broadband services to every single inhabited island regardless of population size.

What are the advantages of working with Chinese investors?

China’s Huawei is one of the main vendors in our mobile network, and we find them to be forward looking in product and service design. I believe investors may take advantage of the Maldives’ many opportunities, as some may not yet be fully explored.
